Framework Description
The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) is the most widely used set of sustainability standards, covering global best practices for organizations to voluntarily demonstrate and communicate their impacts on the environment, people, and economy. These reports can be standalone documents or integrated into existing reports to increase an organization’s credibility and transparency.
Categories
The GRI framework is organized into three sets of standards: the Universal Standards that apply to all organizations and are in line with intergovernmental expectations, the Sector Standards that allow for more consistent reporting on sector-specific impacts, and the Topics Standards that are relevant to particular issues or impact categories. It is important to note that although there are only three sector-specific standards, GRI plans to develop 40 sector-specific standards in the future
Universal
- GRI 1: Requirements and principles for using the GRI Standards
- GRI 2: Disclosures about the reporting organization
- GRI 3: Disclosures and guidance about the organization’s material topics
Sector-Specific
- GRI 11: Oil and Gas
- GRI 12: Coal
- GRI 13: Agriculture, Aquaculture and Fishing
- Under Current Development: Mining, Financial Services, Textiles and Apparel
Topic-Specific
- GRI 200’s: Economic
- GRI 300’s: Environmental
- GRI 400’s: Social
How GRI Applies to Business
The GRI framework aids businesses in reporting and communicating their sustainability impacts in a standardized and transparent manner. This practice fosters stakeholder engagement and risk management and potentially leads to a competitive advantage through brand image, process improvement, and attraction of sustainability-conscious stakeholders.
GRI/GBB Alignment
The majority of GBB initiatives align with at least one GRI initiative, which allows organizations to use one complementary to the other. Following GBB’s actionable initiatives will better position organizations to complete the steps and gather and organize the data required for GRI reporting, while the GRI equips them to communicate their sustainability journey to stakeholders in a standardized and transparent way.
Within the platform, you will see a "GRI" tag in the initiative table under "Frameworks" if that initiative aligns with the framework. If you hover over the tag, you will see a pop-up with the specific GRI standard it relates to.
